Arrowmont School, TN, "Finding Your Form Through Nature", July 8 - July 14, 2018

JULY 8, 2018 – JULY 14, 2018

This workshop focuses on hand-building. Using the beautiful environment of Arrowmont as inspiration, students will create work in clay that captures the essence of the natural stuff they collect. The work created serves as containers for your collection. Participants will learn pinching, slab work, the dowel method, along with a simple plaster press mold. Earthenware will be the clay and work created early in the week will be fired. Students will also learn how to make and use terra sigillata in a variety of ways to enhance the surface of their work in clay. Open to all skill levels.

The Bascom, hand building workshop, A CONVERSATION WITH CLAY THROUGH NATURE, October 21 - 26, 2018

The Bascom

Conversation With Clay Through Nature

Instructor: Alice Ballard, assisted by Dow Redcorn

Workshop Description:

This workshop will focus on hand-building clay forms that are inspired by all the great “natural stuff” found in the splendid natural environment that surrounds the Bascom. Participants will be invited to bring along any of their own natural treasures as well. The focus will be on a number of hand building techniques that suit the organic forms of nature.  Work will be painted and or airbrushed with terra sigillata and meditation bowls will have a glaze liner.  Airbrushing will be taught by Dow Redcorn, an expert in the art of airbrushing as well as hand-building.  Work done the first few days will be fired in electric kilns and later work can be packed as greenware to go home or left for the Bascom to fire for an additional fee.
